The ""hair of the dog" is a shortening of the phrase, "the hair of the dog that bit you." It comes from the old medicinal legend that a smaller portion of what caused your illness can heal you. For example, if you were bitten by a rabid dog, the myth was a hair from that dog could cure you.

Thus: if you have a hangover, a little bit more of what caused it -- a little hair of the dog in the morning -- can speed your recovery.  Of course, there's no real evidence for this. Basically what is actually happening is you feel little bit good again because you're having more of your favorite pour.
