What does "hair of the dog" mean and where does it come from?

One of our copywriters recalls a vivid example of the term, "hair of the dog". He was up at a ski lodge over the weekend with friends. In the evening, the bourbon came out. Everyone was supposed to bring a good bottle with them, to share on the occasion. Most brought more than a bottle; some came with two, three or more. He quipped, "I'm pretty sure Wild Turkey 101 had something to do with not only the proof but the quantity."

"Thankfully we also brought some great cheese and chocolate to lessen the blow of the proof and the quantity.

"Eventually, the gang wandered off to bed, having definitely had a few, and the cabin grew silent. I woke in the morning to the smell of sizzling bacon and grilled pancakes.  On the table top was Knob Creek Smoked Maple."

"A little hungover?" someone inquired?

And that is the hair of the dog. A chaser, often the next morning to help relieve the headache on the morning after. 

PS: The other joke that morning was that someone had forgotten to bring the maple syrup so...

Where does the meaning come from?

The original saying was, "A hair of the dog that bit you." From an old belief that if you were bitten by a rapid dog, you could be cured by taking a potion containing some of the dog's hair. 

The sources are careful to note, of course, that there is no scientific evidence for this, curing rabies or shortening hangovers.

But whatever you do, don't let the dog bite you, the puppy or the libation.
