The "standard diver dress" was first used in the mid 1800s, about the time bourbon got its name. In 1948's Wake of the Red Witch, John Wayne's character Captain Ralls sank to his death, pulled down by a sunken shipwreck, falling off an underwater cliff, while he was trying to retrieve the treasures aboard.
This whiskey t-shirt is inspired by the witch of the sea.
"She's got him," a deckhand says of the ship as he seeing the severed air lines pulled to the surface. "She was waiting for him all this time."
In the beginning of the movie, the Captain caused the ship to sink. It seems the Red Witch had her revenge.
The film starred the beautiful Gail Russell.
Bourbon drinker
For a long time, John Wayne was a bourbon drinker. It was said he would have Wild Turkey shipped to film locations, to ensure he never ran out of the juice. He was in general a "situation drinker"; he'd drink what the moment called for.
Later in life, when he had his yacht the Wild Goose, which regularly journeyed south along the coast of Baja California, it is said he preferred tequila. Sauza Commerativo was his favorite, with a dash of fresh lemon juice and coarse salt. The ice in the glass had been cut from a glacier while the yacht, a former U.S. Navy minesweeper, had been travelling up north.
While known for his westerns, the Duke was at home on the sea. At one point he considered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.
About the diver uniform
Known as hard-hat or copper hat, deep-sea, or heavy gear, the equipment, has been used for salvage missions, civil engineering, pearl diving and other deeper water jobs. The distinctive diving helmet was made from copper, brass, or bronze. The suit could be used in depths of 600 feet (180 meters).
