A lighthouse is a strangely sturdy building, its haunting beauty hardened against the cold harsh crash of the surf. Many of the keepers called the buildings their homes. The occupation was often a family affair, passed down by generations, unchanged for 150+ years. How do you make a home like that, especially in the Northern Sea.
Robert Louis Stephenson, who wrote Treasure Island, can tell you. He came from a long lineage of lighthouse builders and keepers. Between 1807 and 1810, his ancestor Robert Stephenson and partner John Rennie built the Bell Rock Lighthouse, an engineering wonder. It is the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse. It's built on a reef 11 miles off the coast of Angus, Scotland. Robert Louis chose not to enter the family business, but said:
"Whenever I smell salt water, I know that I am not far away from one of the works of my ancestors. When the lights come out at sundown, along the shores of Scotland, I am proud to think they burn more brightly for the genius of my father!"
Which brings us to the Talisker whisky (note the spelling for scotch without the "e."). Talisker was Robert Louis' favorite brand. He even mentioned it in a poem of his:
"The king 'o drinks, as I conceive it, Talisker, Islay, and Glenlivet." -- The Scotsman's Return from Abroad
It is said the the seals camped on the rocks in the surf are the souls of shipwrecked sailors. Wear this tee, in remembrance of those taken by Davy Jones and those builders and keepers of the lights that have pointed the way for so many over the centuries.
A wonderful book to read about this legacy is the Lighthouse Stephensons by Bella Bathurst. Sip it with the Talisker, or of course a bourbon would do.
