Always drink bourbon with your gun hand! Here's the vintage t-shirt!

There's a tradition in bars around the word that you may not know about, if you haven't be to those parts of the world. Let's imagine the tradition happening in a dusty town in the Old West.

You're thirsty and want something to wash down the dust from your gullet. You wander into an unknown bar, dark inside, except for the crevices and assorted bullet holes that let the light shine through.

This was exactly the scene that the singing gunslinger Buster Scruggs found himself entering, in the  Coen Brothers movie, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Scruggs enters and says, "I'd like me a splash of whiskey to wash the trail dust off my gullet and keep my singing voice in fettle."

Bartender replies, "Whiskey's illegal. This is a dry country."

Buster Scruggs points to the other customers and asks, " Well, what are they drinking?"

The bartender answers, "Whiskey. They's outlaws."

 If you've seen the movie, you know that the patience of the  affable singing, and very deadly, Buster Scruggs, gunslinger, dressed in all white, goes only so far. Here is the scene:

So in some parts of the world, that scene might have played out differently. If the bartender and other patrons were more of a friendly type, 

Whiskey shots all around. You would have made sure the pour was bourbon.

Scruggs -- you --  make a toast, but make sure to do one single thing, that makes the night.

Here it is:

You look them in the eye and drink with your gun hand to show your good intentions.

This is an old Scottish proverb. As the men and women of Scotland migrated to the new world, setting up their distilleries in Americas, using corn, this scene undoubtedly played out . Gunfights probably avoided, friendships forged, all bourbon-made.
