The cat's meow was flapper slang. It meant something highly sought after, like some good hooch (liquor) or this classy bourbon tee (t-shirt) ;)

The "flappers" were tired of the old ways. They were tired of the social norms where men got to do things that "weren't suitable for women." One hundred years later, it's hard to image that the great grandmothers of today's young women were gleefully breaking the rules, with short dresses and cigarettes; they danced and they drank. They bobbed their hair, and they listened to jazz.

Scandalous!

Heroic!

It's time they had their own t-shirt, to be proudly worn by women who don't behave, and the men who love them. Respect.

In the first episode of the TV series Boardwalk Empire, the flappers and their goofs (sweeties) are ringing in a New Year, which will bring alcohol prohibition on January 17, 1920.  Nucky Thompson (played by Steve Buscemi) toasts the occasion:

"As you know, in less than two hours, liquor will be declared illegal by decree of the distinguished gentlemen of our nation's Congress. To those beautiful, ignorant bastards!

Thus began the party decade, of smuggled whiskey, bathtub gin, and speakeasies, aka speak softly about the shop (where you could get an illicit drink.)

The music of the day? whangdoodle! (jazz).

If something was really great, it was the bee's knees or the cat's pajamas. These gals weren't looking to be tied down. While they had goofs (sweeties), they didn't want an engagement ring (a handcuff) and chaperones we just so many fire extinguishers. "Out on parole" meant you were divorced.

But you could only get as far as she wanted because sometimes the bank was closed (no kissing). And if you had a beard or any whiskers, you were a whiskbroom.

A bootlegger was known as an embalmer, undoubtedly so-called because of the dubious quality of the bootleg liquor during prohibition. There was even a flapper term for a female bootlegger: a snake charmer.

And what do you call a guy who never hails a cab? A Johnnie Walker, of course.
