The bourbon wrangler is a bartender, steward of legend. He or she might work in a dive or work in the classiest digs. He or she might be your friend, with a personal stash of whiskey; an invite to the house for bbq is a sought-after affair.

The wrangler gently and firmly explains that "all bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon."

A man and his lady walk into a bar. It's about 6PM, an hour or so before dinner. They'd like a drink before walking up the street for the steaks. The lady knows what she wants, a bourbon. 

"Well, you've come to the right place," the host says, "I'm a wrangler of such things."

"We can see, you're wearing the tee," they said. "We've always loved bourbon, and we've trying to learn more about it."

"There are a lot of whisk(e)ys. Irish, scotch, Canadian, Japanese -- America's whiskey has that sweet bite, because it has to be made with at least 51% corn."

"In new charred white  oak barrels..." the wrangler continued.

Is it true, the couple asked, that the reason the barrels must be charred, is because a distiller back in the day used barrels that stored fish and pickles, and needed to bury the flavor. Or because a farmer only had charred barrels because his barn had burned down?

Yes and yes and wink wink those are wonderful myths and legends. 

The couple settled on a 12-year, a sweet spot of aging. Both also had a water back and the wrangler taught them how to mix into their mouths to find the perfect blend to open up the flavors on their palate.

They tried something else that was recommended. They were getting happy.

Finally, the wrangler that tended the bar reminded them of their dinner date, down the street. The steak, with the wedge and the au gratin potatoes he suggested.

"What's their bar menu like, anything good like here?"

"Only for friends, tell Murray I said hi. Ask to see the secret menu that doesn't have the vodka on it."
