He remembers that night vividly. When he and she whispered bourbon to each other.
He was in Chicago on a business trip. He was alone at the hotel bar on Michigan Avenue. The wind off the lake was bitter cold and he was glad to be inside. Before going to the hotel, he had taken a walk to see the old Playboy building, an Art Deco 37-storey building completed in 1929. The magazine had been one of the reasons he had gotten into advertising. He sometimes felt he was a generation too late; that he might have been more at home in the Mad Men TV show-era, early to mid 1960s He was amused to learn that the former Playboy headquarters was sold to someone named Draper in 2001.
Tonight, his last night in Chicago before flying back home in the morning would be a solitary celebration, as he had closed the deal with the account he came to see. He had the company American Express card and was going to enjoy it. He ordered a shrimp cocktail, a tomahawk rare, Au Gratin potatoes... and he needed to select a bourbon.
She came in and was given the booth across and kitty-cornered from him. The girl next door he thought, on Michigan Ave.
But back to the bourbon. He had always liked "the bite" of American whiskey. The menu was solid. He was looking for something different, something he normally could not drink. There was of course Knob Creek, Maker's Mark and his favorite 46. Old Grandad was there. He had read Fleming in Live and Let Die: James Bond "drank a quarter of a pint of Old Grandad with the steak and had two cups of very strong coffee."
He chose Michter's 10-Year, and he told the waiter.
"Good choice," he heard her say.
"Thank you," he smiled. In that moment he remembered Mad Men, as Don Draper was leaving the soundstage of You Only Live Twice. The orchestra swells up. Draper walks into a bar and orders an old fashioned.
From the kitty-corner, she tells the waiter I'll have what's he's having. Then she asks if he is alone.
He said he was.
She asked, may I join you?
Of course.
A memory was to be made. A kiss was in the works.
P.S, a true story.
