Bourbon Logo Special Edition T-Shirt

We love this story, even if though it's probably stretched a bit. It was told by one of our friends, about his grandfather, a Madison Avenue ad man. Like Mad Men, although maybe a few years before that. It is the story of how this Bourbon Logo Special Edition t-shirt came to be.

One day, he had a meeting at Rockefeller Center to pitch a potential new client, that could result in big business. Archibald put on his finest suit and tie and grabbed a cab. He day only got worse. The rain started to pour.

When he got to the Center, he got a coffee and promptly spilled the hot drink down the front of his crisp white shirt. The tie was ruined too. Fifteen minutes until the meeting. He decides to find a men's store and -- in the time it would have taken for him to down that coffee -- he bought a very expensive shirt and a tie -- put them on, bought an umbrella , and rushed to the meeting.

"Mr. (So and So) is running a little late," the receptionist said.

He got his coffee but it was dreadful, but he was very careful not to spill any. 

Turns out, his client was running really late. Finally, nearly 30 minutes, he could see Mr. So and So walking into the lobby with several men. As they got closer, he saw those men were ad men. They were his competitors. They were laughing and joking and shaking hands. 

The awkwardness quickly turned to nonchalance as his ex-potential new client said, "Archibald, what are you doing here?"

"We had a meeting, Mr. So and So.

"Well obviously that should have been cancelled. We went with these fine gentlemen."

"Tough break, Archie," one of the gentleman smiled.

Archie wanted to say something but he tried to refrain. He could feel the words in his throat trying to climb out, "Let us out!" But Archie's tongue stopped them. Instead, he said, "May I speak to you, So and So."

"I hardly think that's necessary, we have our ad men!" 

"Ta da!" one of them joyfully replied, less than courteous .

"Sir, per your request our agency prepared a presentation to..."

"I changed my mind," So and So started to glare.

The words that Archibald tried keeping in his throat escaped. 

Outside, he realized he forgot his umbrella. Drenched, he walked into a nearby bar and ordered a double Schenley bourbon, neat.

"Forgot your umbrella, eh?" the bartender replied "Listen, if you want, I could give you one of these Special Edition t-shirts. Our distributor gave us a bunch. 

Archibald accepted and when to the bathroom to change. When he came back, the bartender was pouring his Schenley and another man was seated at the bar.

"Nice shirt," the man offered. "And a nice bourbon."

"Thanks. Loving them both right now. It's been one of those days."

The two struck up a brief conversation. Archie told him he was an ad man. But the stranger never said who he was. But the bartender seemed to know him, a regular perhaps. Before the man left, he gave Archie his card. "Call me next week, we're looking for an advertising agency. "

After the man left, our friend's grandfather read the card. "Lewis Rosenstiel, CEO of Schenley Industries.

And that's how Archibald and his agency got the largest liquor company in the world as an account, and this tee became his favorite. It is said he acquired several colors, and enjoyed wearing a sport coat with them, long before it was fashionable.
