A couple of gals and guys at Colonel Bourbon headquarters were drinking some Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

We were brainstorming a good new design for a t-shirt; our latest bourbon tee., and as the libation took hold, we contemplated:

What do we want in a lover?

They gotta love bourbon; at least they gotta know what bourbon is, and how it is distinguished from whiskey in general. One a first date, one of us declared, we must find out out if they are bourbon bred.

We had our first lyric

That means, one of us wagged, "They gotta be corn fed."

We had our second lyric.

The chorus harks back to Marilyn Monroe.. She had 430 books in her personal library. While it's not certain how many she read, she was known to be voracious reader.  Google "Marilyn Monroe reading a book" You will see a lot. Many of her books were auctioned off by Christie's in 1999;classics ranging from Proust to Hemingway, literature, anthologies, art, biography, Freud...

Here's the French literature she had:

  • Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
  • The Works Of Rabelais
  • The Guermantes Way by Marcel Proust
  • Cities Of The Plain by Marcel Proust
  • Within A Budding Grove by Marcel Proust
  • The Sweet Cheat Gone by Marcel Proust
  • The Captive by Marcel Proust
  • Nana by Emile Zola

We do not know if she had a biography of the House of Bourbon. "Bourbon kings first ruled France and Navarre in the 16th century. By the 18th century, members of the Spanish Bourbon dynasty held thrones in Spain, Naples, Sicily, and Parma. Spain and Luxembourg have monarchs of the House of Bourbon." (Wikipedia).

Which brings us back to the chorus of this tee.  On the one hand, we are thinking about Marilyn's classic hourglass figure -- poured in a glass just right, neat. And if the imagery stopped there, this would still be a mighty cool tee. Marilyn poured through a lot of reading . She was smarter than most men assumed she was. Even her husband, playwright Arthur Miller didn't fully comprehend why this beautiful woman fell for him as he fell for her. They were fans of words, if only he would have understood that.

The woman who likes bourbon knows her whiskey and she knows what she wants. Many want her but few can capture her heart because they need to also capture her interest, her thoughts, her mind.

Wearing this t-shirt is a great way to weed through the suitors.. There will be those who will say, "looks like you were poured right." And such characters will have their place and time, just like Marilyn, a better actress than many realized, used them for their purposes. But look for the occasional one who recognizes the deeper message. Like this tee, you might want to get them for a longer time.
